In short, the answer is a resounding NO. It depends entirely on your industry and what you want to achieve. If you are self-employed in a services based, run of the mill type industry such as plumbing or building, then simply printing your business name in a plain font is professional and more than sufficient.

Small businesses offering services (as opposed to products) can convey a professional look without the fancy graphics and colors of a logo. One of the core purposes of a logo is to provide brand recognition. Small, service oriented companies do not need brand recognition. It is customer satisfaction and word of mouth that keeps them moving forward. A customer will keep coming back if they are satisfied with the job you provided.

For medium and/or fast growing serviced based companies the need for a logo increases. The reason being that a logo helps provide brand recognition across a wide geographical area. Imagine, for example, that a customer you fitted with double glazing relocates to the north of the country and their new property requires double glazing. The customer probably doesn't realize that you also operate in this part of the country. They may, instead, look at their local directory for an alternative. With a bit of luck they will notice your memorable logo and you will get the business.

On the other hand, it is critical for product oriented companies to brand their products with a logo that is instantly recognizable. This is especially true if you supply and sell your products wholesale and not simply direct to the public. If your products are being sold in a wide range of shops and venues then you will need to stand out.

So whether you need a logo or not is up to you but if you decide to go for one lets hope it will bring your business great success!
